AI For the Win
At its core, AI is the triumph of metrics over judgment leading to mediocrity (borrowed from Iain McGilchrist’s Substack): AI aggregates; humans discern and evaluate. I suspect that AI will always regress toward the mean because only human reason can account for chance and statistical outliers (not to mention ethical considerations). Mediocrity is AI’s inevitable and irremediable product.
AI will triumph over us, not because it is, or ever can be, inherently more powerful than us. It will triumph because, by choosing mediocrity, we are choosing to make ourselves less powerful than the thing we have created.
